I’ve been considering starting a second newsletter to split the topics I write on. Certain readers follow me for work topics like engagement, strengths, leadership, etc. Writing about these topics is safe and doesn’t require much vulnerability or sacrifice; I share what I’m learning and hope it’s useful.
But there’s another type of writing that is more personal. This writing is risky because it requires me to open my life and faith to others. Writing about Buddy’s death and offering a Thanksgiving prayer are examples. I wondered if they fit among the other posts. Would they be too personal? Would readers care?
Then I remembered that a foundational premise of this newsletter comes from a line in the movie Shadowlands: “We read to know we’re not alone.” I also think we write to know we’re not alone. Not only do I write to teach, but I also write to connect. I don’t know how to connect except for opening up my life and inviting you in.
There will not be two newsletters, only one.

“We put my service dog Hero to sleep yesterday and today I still have trouble breathing because with each exhale I lose the part of him that still lingers in my lungs after I kissed him for the last time and released him. I can’t stop crying. Your post made me feel less strange for taking it this hard.”—Beyhan Trock
