Maximize Your Talents: 10 Focus Areas for Strengths Coaching
Are you curious about how leveraging your unique talents can transform your approach to work and life? Let's explore 10 essential topics for strengths coaching.
I remember when an employee, let's call him Matt, approached me for help with crucial conversations and receiving feedback. Matt was talented, but he struggled with these interactions, often feeling anxious and unsure of how to navigate them. We began by discussing some fundamental principles of effective communication and feedback. However, a key part of our conversation was examining Matt's unique talents and how they might impact his ability to engage in these crucial conversations.
As a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach, I use the CliftonStrengths® assessment to help individuals and teams maximize their performance. Matt's CliftonStrengths assessment revealed his strong talents in Responsibility, Harmony, and Consistency. These talents made him exceptionally reliable, conflict-averse, and fair-minded. However, they also presented some challenges in crucial conversations.
Responsibility®: Matt's strong sense of duty and commitment made him highly dependable. He felt deeply obligated to meet others' expectations and fulfill his promises. While this made him a trusted team member, it also meant he often took on too much, had difficulty saying no, and, by reflex, deflected blame.
Harmony®: Matt's talent for Harmony made him skilled at creating peaceful environments and avoiding conflict. He was excellent at finding common ground and fostering cooperation. However, this same talent made him uncomfortable with confrontation, leading him to avoid addressing important issues.
Consistency®: Matt's Consistency talent meant he valued fairness and treated everyone equally. He was great at establishing clear rules and standards, ensuring everyone was on the same page. However, this could also make him rigid in his approach, struggling to adapt to individual differences or unique situations.
By understanding these dynamics, we were able to develop strategies that leveraged his strengths while addressing his challenges. Through this process, Matt not only improved his ability to have crucial conversations but also gained a deeper understanding of his own talents and how to use them effectively in various situations.
Like Matt, many people can benefit from exploring their strengths in different areas. To help you begin, here are 10 hot topics for strengths coaching. As you consider where to start, ask yourself: What will make the biggest difference right now?
