Ever wondered how someone rises from a lot attendant to overseeing the most employees in a major organization?
In this episode, we explore Bruce Kolz's inspiring journey as an executive manager in the car business. He started from humble beginnings while studying marketing and management in college. His first significant role as a service writer taught him invaluable customer service and problem-solving lessons, leading to a promotion to service manager at a young age.
Through hands-on learning and overcoming challenges, he navigated his way to becoming an executive manager at CMA, where he now oversees the most employees in the organization. His focus on building authentic relationships with team members, managing OEM partnerships, and addressing staffing issues has been crucial to his success.
A key aspect of Bruce's leadership approach is the emphasis on accountability, fairness, and consistency (AFC), which helps set clear expectations and build trust within the team. He believes addressing undue stress and eliminating excuses are essential for optimal performance. Tools like the Gallup Q12 survey and CliftonStrengths assessment play a significant role in identifying and leveraging individual talents to drive better outcomes.
His top five CliftonStrengths are Learner, Restorative, Relator, Achiever, and Self-Assurance, which make him an inquisitive problem solver. Interestingly, we share the unique experience of being identical twins whose parents weren't expecting twins.
The episode also highlights CMA’s unique and supportive culture, which sets it apart in the auto industry. This journey underscores the importance of understanding team members' frustrations and career goals, fostering trust and collaboration through authentic conversations, and continuously striving for excellence in leadership. By focusing on these principles, Bruce has created a positive and productive work environment that benefits employees and customers.
